asylum-seekers: Christiane, Manchester
Christiane is from the Democratic Republic of Congo, where her father is a well-known member of the opposition party. Christiane was a trainee solicitor in the DRC, and was kidnapped and tortured before she fled to the UK.
She was initially refused asylum by the Home Office; an adjudicator granted her asylum on appeal, which was challenged by the Home Office, and her second hearing upheld the decision of the first. Having been granted refugee status in November 2005, she currently lives alone in National Asylum Support Service (NASS) accommodation in Wigan, Greater Manchester, and is studying English at the local language college.
